Marlous van der Weijden
Since November 2016 I started my PhD next to my masters of medicine and biomedical sciences (as an MD/PhD project) within the departments of medical genetics and neurology. I study disorders of neurodegeneration with brain iron accumulation (in short NBIA). Due to my combined studies, I’m interested in both the molecular and clinical aspects of these disorders. During my research I will explore yet unknown genes possibly causing NBIA phenotypes and characterise the underlying disease mechanism. Furthermore, together with the department of radiology we will characterise the normal development of iron accumulation in the brain in heathy aging and in NBIA patients.
